Traditional dress

Sikhs regard the turban as essential to their Punjabi attire. There's a strong cultural connection to beards, too. Even though Hindus and Muslims have moved away from it, Sikhs honor their traditional beards. They can't cut their hair, so the turban holds special importance. Punjabi men's typical dress is the 'tahmat.' It's like a sarong or loose 'pajama,' worn with a straight cut 'kurta'. 'Juti', traditional Punjabi shoes, have been popular for centuries. Muktsar and Patiala boast their special 'shoes'. You can often see Punjabi men in rural areas donning warm sweaters crafted from the women's fabric in the family.

In Punjab, women typically don the 'Salwar Kameez'. The 'Salwar' is the pants component, paired with a 'kurta'; a shirt-like item that can be snug or loose. A rectangular scarf, called a 'duppatta', rounds off the outfit. 'Phulkari', a type of detailed embroidery, is a favorite craft all across India. Using vibrant silk thread on thick cotton or 'Khaddar' cloth, Punjabi women master this art style.
